The Concept

This project aims to test the process of creating a mixed reality (MR) fashion show in collaboration with clients. The clients were 5th semester fashion design students at GIU (German International University) taking a course called “Multimedia and Fashion Event Planning,” where students were tasked with planning and executing a fashion show that combines both physical and digital garments. As the responsible teaching assistant in this course,  I participated in creating the course content and introduced students to digital media techniques for showcasing their digital garments. I offered to create customized avatars based on each student’s design concept to showcase their digital garments efficiently.

The concept of the MR fashion show merges real models and garments with digital avatars and digital garments. The show aimed to teasing the audience by showing them the digital avatars first then physical models with real garments enters the show. The process began with a Pre-Production phase where students were divided into groups to plan various parts of the show. During the Production phase, I created a digital avatar with Egyptian features and worked closely with students to style it based on their vision and design inspirations.

The Workflow

I began by exporting the standard avatar from CLO 3D in OBJ format to maintain the same proportions and dimensions. Next, I imported the generic CLO 3D avatar into ZBrush and sculpted its features based on a mood board to give it more Egyptian characteristics. After the sculpting process, I exported the model to Autodesk Maya for retopology, UV mapping, and texturing. Once complete, I imported the customized avatars with different styling options back into CLO 3D using the "register as avatar" tool, which included rigging. I then added poses, simulated the students' garments on the avatars, and rendered the final results.
